We Love Shortrib

The 49ers may have lost, but Ben and I won with this fantastic meal tonight.  Instead of pigging out on dips and snacks all day, we opted for one indulgent meal.  When the guys in red and gold were out fighting for the (unattained) win, Ben and I were eating slow cooker beef short ribs in Cabernet sauce, creamy Parmesan mashed potatoes, and roasted Brussels sprouts. Oh yummy, what an amazing meal! I hope you all had a fantastic time watching... Read More

The Grind

The week gets so busy sometimes.  We work, we get exercise, we run errands, and sometimes there just isn’t enough time to cook something healthy for the family (or, in my case, Ben and I).  I really, really enjoy cooking but without some organization, the weekly meals go by the wayside and are overtaken by the convenience of frozen burritos, boxed rice, and the all too tempting Pho take out restaurant across the street.  A point of clarification:... Read More

East Coast Eats

What is it with the flu this year?  Does every single person have it? Ben and I went on this fantastic vacation over the holidays, I set all of these goals to get the new year off to a great start and then, bam! A week in a half into the new year, a bout of the flu completely de-rails my new years goals.  One of those goals, along with working out more and keeping plans with friends, was posting on this blog once a week. Alas, when you fall off... Read More

Other People’s Recipes

Oh hello holiday rush, how are you doing? Holiday Shopping…check! Holiday Cards Sent…check! Holiday Decorations…check! With all of the additional obligations that the holidays bring, it is hard for me to find time to be creative in the kitchen.  Thank goodness that I have access to the recipes of very talented cooks to sustain Ben and I throughout the week. Other Person’s Recipe #1  - Tomato and Feta Stuffed Chicken Breasts... Read More

Getting Crafty

This weekend I was inspired to get into the holiday spirit. That is, I got into the holiday spirit after sleeping in, peeling myself off the couch, and going  for a nice run in the park.  Then, I got into the holiday spirit and decided to bust out all my Christmas decorations.  Sweat Pink, y’all. Anyways, I had signed up for a terrarium making workshop on Sunday.  On Saturday night, I knew I would be bringing home a beautiful table centerpiece,... Read More

Time to Relax

Before the holiday madness began, Ben and I got away for a relaxing weekend in wine country.  We stayed in Carlton, Oregon and spent the night in converted grain silos at the Abbey Road Farms B&B.   We visited several places to taste wine, but our favorite vineyards from the trip were Coelho and Dukes Family Vineyard. What I love about Carlton is that the whole town is centered around celebrating good food and wine. As we were walking through... Read More

Boke Bowl

After a few days of turkey, stuffing, and all of this good stuff: I was getting sick of leftovers and yearning for something a little different than Thanksgiving food.  The problem with Portland is that there are so many wonderful  places to try. So many that an interesting place can go untried for a year or two before I find myself moseying up the the front door.  This afternoon, after a awesome trip to the gym, Ben and I finally drove down to... Read More

Farmer’s Market Eggplant Dinner

It was an eat-out type of week.  Over the weekend we traveled to Ashland, Oregon to watch my friend Jamie run the Pine to Palm 100.  Watching someone else run an ultra marathon can be really tiring ( I hope you guys are getting my irony, here).  I wonder what it would feel like to actually run one!? The busy weekend was just a precursor to the busy week. The chill in the air was a constant reminder that it was time to compost, turn, and plant... Read More

Summer Break, Broken Computer

Hi There, It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?  I could wax on about being busy and not having time to blog.  But the main culprit of my absence was the star-crossed romance of these two lovers. It took awhile to fix my laptop, and then right when I got it back it broke again (a non-liquid related break the second time around!) But now, finally, we are back in business!  Here is a recap of what Ben and I did this summer while I was on my... Read More

Salt and Lime

No, sadly, we’re not talking about tequila shots or making margaritas in this post.  Instead, we’re going talk about a few lesser known applications for salt and lime. Recently I found myself with a bumper crop of radishes. Realistically, there are only so many things you can do with radishes and after awhile I was dreading ANOTHER run of the mill salad . I had friends visiting from San Francisco and I really wanted to make them something... Read More
